Real-time Data Exchange and Interoperability For Intelligent Transportation Systems

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) apply advanced technology to the nation’s transportation needs. ITS encompasses all areas of transportation, including highway, air, water, and bus and rail transit applications and technologies; both within a single system, and within integrated, intermodal systems. New technologies from such fields as information processing, electronics, control systems, and communications are being applied to increase the safety of travel, to improve the efficiency and capacity of the nation’s highways, rail networks, air travel and waterways, and to reduce societal, economic, and environmental costs associated with congestion and accidents.
